Kickboxing....My Kind of a Girl's Night Out

3 friends....since we were about 12 years old.  Reuniting for a kickboxing adventure/girls' night out...
Old friends, refusing to grow old.

So fun.  So awesome.  Even if I'm such an uncoordinated dork. And, apparently, I hit like a girl.  ;)
But...hey.  It was only the first class of 5 that we signed up for.  You can't learn new things
if you're not willing to look likea dork sometimes.  And I am totally willing,  haha ;)

And.....my kids. One day....they will look back and be thankful for the woman that took care of them.....& kickboxed across the living room & into their bedrooms as she warmed up, did less than supersonic Wonder Woman spins, and basically acted like a fool sometimes. They will laugh and say, "I'm glad my mom was a li'l bit crazy". Right now, however, I think they're thankful that very few see the things that they do....
wink emoticon
Their eyes roll. Their mouths say, "MOM. You're weird". But....those lips. They turn upward, even though they fight it....and they smile.

Haha. ;)smile emoticon

When It Rains, The Party Goes On..

‪#‎tbt‬, because Ashlyn Pennington was just laughing over these pics & the memories yesterday....
Who says when it POURS the entire time during her brother's bday park party, that the party has to stop??
I'm a BAD mom. I let my kids play for hours in the rain (don't call DCF....there was no lightening ). AND I let them make forts in the woods. AND they carried big sticks. AND had boys vs girls planning/strategy meetings under the bridge.....And it remains in their memories as one of their most favorite parties ever.
Love my Sassafras girl!!! And a friendship that began just after birth & is still going strong!!

Let a Little More Sunshine In....

Ashlyn was not up for visitors again today :( , but that didn't stop a few friends from dropping some things off! :)

Do you remember my post about Ashlyn, her friend Laura, and their "BFF" that they made while volunteering at VBS last week??  This is a pic of the three of them (above).  Love all the pics she brought....and love me some Laura ♥

Her room is looking more & more cheerful!! And she likes the decorative effect, so I was sure to remind her to always remember :: Mama Knows Best!!! :P

AND....yes, I did hang that HUGE banner all by myself ~~ just call me ElastaGirl !! ;)

The Guest Book...

During a visit the other day, someone suggested having people sign in as they come. The more I've thought abt it, the more I've thought what a great idea it was.....for Ashlyn to have a kind of "Guest Book", not just for this hospital stay but for the duration of her fight. A record of all those who love her & come to pay her a visit & spend time with her, to be able to look back on the days ...and see just one more way that she's not fighting alone. A visual reminder that God is with her in so many ways, using the Body of Christ to love, support & give her strength with each hug, smile, laugh, gift & card given, milkshake brought, movie shared.....& in the sometimes needed quiet moments, when someone cared enough just to sit and share the silence with her.

I just started it & I'm trying to fill in the days before today....and hoping I don't miss recording anyone!! The days....& my mind....get a little blurry sometimes!! Sigh.

Just look at all the sweet friends who would have come today. :( Hoping that she will start feeling better tomorrow & be up for more visits soon. ♥

Perfect Timing....

Hey. I have a story to tell! I bet you're shocked. ;)

Ashlyn made a friend while volunteering last week at VBS......the mechanical bull operator. She, along with another BFF...sweet Laura,  has affectionately named & called him "Best Friend", brought him snacks & goofed off with him on the days she was there. She has invited him to church several times throughout the week. On the days she had to miss due to her dr's appts, he found... out about Ashlyn's diagnosis and her upcoming surgery. Turns out, his sister just had the same surgery last week for a port and g-tube that Ashlyn is having. Before she left last night, his "maybe" of coming to church turned into he "will" come to church....and that he wanted to keep up with how she is doing.

A coincidence that their paths would coincide?? That she just so happens to strike up this silly/fun friendship at this particular time in her life, on this particular week, that would bring her so much laughter....and meet someone who's sister is going through the same thing at the same time, showing her that she's not the only one?? And that she could, in return, have an impact on him & get him to agree to come to church?? I think not.

God WILL use for good, what Satan means for destruction.....and has perfect timing in the orchestration of who and what He brings into our lives when. He's cool like that.

Romans 8:28

We have a hearing test at Nemours and PET scan at Shands today, and Ashlyn's surgery is tomorrow. They will put in her port and g-tube and might begin her first round of chemo while we're in the hospital, depending on all the test and scan results. She will spend at least one night there......and she asked me on the way home last night, "I'll get to go to church Wednesday night, right?" and got so mad when the answer was "no". "But I'll be out of the hospital in time...."

Love that girl. So much. ♥

Manic Move....

What kind of friend drives all the way from TN to FL to help you with a rush packing job/move, stays up till 3:45 the night before finishing orders so that she can do so, brings with her all kinds of helpful supplies, makes phone calls, gets info & sets things up for you & tells you what to do cuz you. just. can't. think. & is willing to be your buffer against people if necessary.....and doesn't ask you if she can do these things but just tells you that's how it's gonna be ???

THIS KIND. <3  <3  <3  <3

Could never have done all THIS without her....

That's two 16-ft pods loaded to the max....and we still had to put some things into a 10 ft storage facility.  SO EXHAUSTED....

Never Quit Never

Repeatedly heard this weekend by a certain Never Quit child o' mine, "this is awesome!!! Jacksonville is such an awesome place to live!! This is awesome"!!!

And from the youngest child: "this is actually a lot of fun. I think I might do this with you next year. I'm going to try running more".

And the oldest child had a good time, too. ;)

This mama loves that. ❤

Jacob and I ran the 5K with a group of friends, dressed as our favorite Super Heroes in support of a sweet boy just diagnosed with cancer.   I was Wonder Woman {a lifelong dream fulfilled ;) } and Jacob was Captain America.

Please pray for little Keegan.... :(

A New Dress

We drove into Macon today to get Granny her new dress.  When Mandy was here yesterday, she couln't understand why we just didn't get something out of her closet.  Granny had lost quite a bit of weight and nothing would fit, but even if she hadn't, we would have done it anyway.  She would want a new dress.

She was Down-Home Country, a woman who worked hard and didn't shy away from hard work, but she was a woman who liked to take care of herself, too.  She loved "purty" clothes and jewelry to go with it, loved to go to the "beauty shop" and get her hair done, loved to put on her make-up, to look good and smell good.  She would have wanted a new dress.

As I got ready to go, visions of what seems like the kazillions of times we got ready to go to Macon went through my mind.  There was a phrase she used to say every time as I would pass her in the hallway, either before or after she got herself ready, and it frustrates me that I can't recall it.  She was always ready first and would be waiting in her recliner in the den.  Without fail, I would walk in, and she would smile and say in her Southern twang, "AlrightLook out, now!!" and I'd laugh at her and off we'd go, traveling the expanse of country highway to Macon, country music playing.

I get myself ready this morning in the same pink bathroom I've gotten ready in so many times and it's hard to put my make-up on because the tears are so close to breaking through.  I'm shaky today and walking a fine line, trying to maintain composure.  I try to push away the thoughts of what we're doing, pushing them away, pushing down the tears, the thoughts, the memories that hurt.  Now's not the time.

Driving down that familiar highway, my thoughts keep taking over until someone says something that jars my mind back to where it should be.  I say a prayer of thanks for the friends who have said they're praying for me because I know their prayers are getting me there safely.

We get to Macy's and walk inside ~ begin to look for just the right dress, but nothing seems right.  And it has to be just right.  A sales associate comes up to us and asks Mama what we're looking for.  After a slight hesitation, she tells her and she shows us several dresses......one of which is quite beautiful and we can't put down.  It's perfect for her, feminine, but not too feminine, dressy and classy.  I can picture her in it and the tears try to escape, so I walk away to distract myself and hear my phone notify me of a text.  It was from my precious friend, letting me know she was thinking of me and praying for me right that moment.  God's timing is perfect.  We ask the associate to hold it for us so that we can walk through the mall and continue to look, just to be sure.

Walking out into the mall, I'm hit with instant pain in my chest as I take into view the mall I haven't been to in so many years, but it's so familiar to me.  I don't even know how many times I've walked this mall, but as we walk through it now, I can see us walking through it together, sometimes for something specific, sometimes just to get out and spend time together and have a good time.  In my  memories, the mall is always crowded, eager shoppers there for some huge sale just like we were.  Now, it seems so empty....many of the stores have closed and relocated to a newer mall across town and it makes me sad.  There's not a thing wrong with this mall, it's very nice & beautiful and I hate to think of it not doing well because I want it to always be here.

We  make our way through, looking and making a few purchases as we go.  I glance down the mall and see one of the major department stores closed.  "Is that Sears?", I ask and my mama says, "Yeah....good ole Sears is closed up".  I'm instantly gone, back in time so many years, to a shopping trip.....just me and Granny.  It was summer, and I was spending the week with her.  This was the day we went to town; she wanted to buy me a new dress.  I remember walking beside her, happy as a clam, when she looked down at her wrist and panicked when she didn't see her watch on her wrist.  Pawpaw had given it to her......he had passed away years before, and it was precious to her.  She was so upset, the more we retraced our steps and didn't find it.  We finally made it back to Sears, back to the Pretty Plus section of the children's department {I was quite the chunky monkey for several years}.  We were about to give up, about to leave with her so upset, when I saw it.  It was underneath a rack of dresses and our day was saved.  I don't know how many times I heard her tell that story.....the story of How Jill Found Her Watch.  "Good ole Jill', she'd say.  "I don't know what I would've done without her".

Fastforward many years, and at another trip to the Macon Mall,  I lost my engagement ring.  We didn't find it, and I had to go home and tell my fiance what I'd lost.  The fact that I didn't have a pretty ring on my finger bothered Granny so much, that on our next trip up, she handed me that watch that she loved so much because my PawPaw had given it to her.  She wanted me to take it to a jeweler and have the diamonds in it made into a ring for me.  I wear those diamonds on my left hand now......it represents not only my commitment to my own marraige, but her sweet love for me and legacy of strong love Granny & PawPaw had for each other.

We walk a little more and I'm constantly alternating to feeling in control and losing control, pulling the reigns tighter and tighter on the dam that I'm trying to keep up.  We pass the food court, and the Wendy's that used to be on the corner is gone.  Mama and I would change up where & what we ate, but Granny always got a Wendy's single with chesese, small fries and a coke.  Every single time.

We ended up going back to Macy's and purchasing the first dress we saw.  As mama stands in line, she tells me how beautiful the casket is, how much it cost but it didn't matter because Granny deserved the best, and mentions that she didn't even look at the price of the dress.  "Doesn't matter", she said.  "She never gave us anything but the best, and the best is what she's going to have".

It's true.  Only the best for those she loved.

I walk away again, pretending to look at clothes while she waits and pays......this is so hard.  My sweet girl walks up and says, 'I love you".  She keeps telling me she loves me, which is unusual for her.....to say it this much.  She sees me hurting and wants to do something.....it's the only thing she can think of to do.

Thank you, Lord, for my sweet baby.

We're almost done, almost through with this trip.  I walk back towards my mama as the sales associate hands her the dress and her receipt, saying something about "in case it needs to be returned".  As we walk to the car, mama says, "I think it's going to be kind of hard to return it".  She's killing me with these things she keeps saying and I say a prayer, thanking God that I have my sunglasses on.

This day has been so difficult.  It's raining now, and I read again through several texts that came in today from my closest friends.  I wonder if they know how much it matters to me.....that they've prayed for me,  thought of me and cared enough to send them...... to try to love on me through the miles.  So much like family, I wish that they were here with me.  They get me.  They would know what to say to me, but wouldn't have to say anything.....just their being here would help.  They understand what I need most and would surround me with hugs and prayers, would comfort me with their sweet presence and reminders of God's love and faithfulness.

I check my email and make my way through so many thoughtful messages from so many other sweet and precious friends.....the Lord encouraging me and loving me through each one.   Most from friends in Jacksonville, and then a few that surprise me.  People sending me messages through the contact section of my blog,  people that I don't even know, that are reading the posts, telling me they are praying for me and my family, telling me of their own recent or not-so-recent losses, offering me comfort through their words and thanking me for posting about my journey through this.  I'm amazed at how Christ can and will use anything and everything for His Glory.  Who would've thought that writing about my pain because I don't know how else to deal with all my thoughts would cause someone to thank me??

I don't want to face what we have to do tomorrow, and what we have to do on Thursday....my breathing gets shaky and a panicky feeling takes over when I think about it......this hurts so very much.  But I know the Lord is with me, every painful step of the way......I don't know how people do this without Him.

"Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Multitude Monday: Gifts 363 - 387

"If you want to turn your life around, try thankfulness. It will change your life mightily."
~ Gerald Good

I'm slowly but surely getting started on my New Year's Resolutions, one of them being getting back to my blog. =)  What better day to make a come-back than Multitude Monday & adding to my ever-growing list of thankfulness, which is actually much bigger than any number could ever reach.

Picking up where I left off......

363.  the holidays are OVER!! maybe sad, but true.....they exhaust me & stress me out!

364.  sore muscles {another NY's Resolution ; ) }......perhaps it's weird, but I've always liked the feeling of sore muscles when I haven't worked out in a while or push myself to a new level.  Makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something! ; )

365.  a new sewing machine =)

366.  chilly nights

367.  mild days

368.  healthy meals

369.  that moment of realization that a long-ago prayer was answered, one that was prayed for / pleaded for repeatedly, over & over again until I finally gave up, stopped asking and moved on......

370.  ......and being struck with the knowledge that He didn't forget even though part of me did, that He heard my cries, and gave me double of what I asked for ♥

371. knowing that forgiveness was granted in response to the remorse I felt at not recognizing it sooner

372.  friendships that come into your life at the perfect time, bringing with them

373.  that feeling of kindred spirits,

374.  laughter,

375.  silliness,

376.  prayer partners,

377.  accountability,

378.  and someone who understands so completely that you know without a doubt that it was all His doing

379.  exasperating, frustrating, heart-breaking, hurtful, judgemental, maddening people...... because in the end, they are blessings, too.....

380.  for they send me running straight to Him, who

381.  calms my fears,

382.  dries my tears,

383.  renews a right spirit within me,

384.  and brings to a closer, more intimate walk in order to keep my

385.  Joy,

386.  Peace,

387.  and Faith.....regardless of what 2012 throws my way ; )

Did you make any New Year's Resolutions?  Have you started them?  If not, I'm a firm believer in the philosophy that it's never to late!! ; )

"Mom, can you?", "Mom can I?", "Mom, can we?", "Jill, can you?"  "could you?", "would you?".

Sigh.

Ummmmm, Really???

I completely get the idea behind this little catchphrase, but admit I wonder at the person who came up with it. I don't think this person has much in common with me.  ; )

I also think that this phrase could make some people feel very guilty for being, well.......REAL.  And NORMAL.

Am I blessed?  Without a doubt.

Beyond Measure.

Am I thankful?  Absolutely.

Every day.

Am I stressed?  Do I sometimes feel so overwhelmed that I can't focus and I think if I don't get a break somewhere, somehow, that the men in white coats will surely come haul me away?

I've instructed my children that if this ever does actually happen, they are required by law to come and visit me.  ; )

I am BLESSED.  In more ways than my tiny little overworked and underpaid ; ) brain can even begin to fathom.  I have the three most incredible children ever created {I know....you think yours are...sorry to burst your bubble ; ) }, I have love, I have awesomely fabulous friends, I have a roof over my head, food to eat, ♥music♥ to sing, ♥homeschooling♥, pets to pet, and work I can do from home using talents that He so graciously gave to me so that I can stay at home.

But to be honest, to be REAL.....with many wonderful blessings come stress.  There are things I do because I want to and things I do because I have to.  I haven't figured out how to let any of those things go at this season of my life, because for the most part.....they are dependent on each other.

And so I strive for balance.  And on those days when I can actually hear the men in white coats coming down the street because balance is nowhere in sight......I realize that in all the busy-ness, in all the chaos of life,  my focus has shifted from the One who gives me the strength to be all He's called me to be in this season to the things He's called me to.

I know I'm not the only one out there juggling so many balls in life right now that they're often tripping all over the ones that have fallen around them.  I know I'm not the only one who gets weary and overwhelmed........and when my eyes are focused on the things, the impossible list of tasks and responsibilities that I cannot fulfill in my own strength, I know that I forgot to give them to the One who gives me the strength in the first place.

Or, more accurately....I did give them to Him, but then I took them back.  Why do I do that?!  Sometimes I wonder why He doesn't stop accepting my apologies and just give up on me....but I'm thankful that He doesn't.

I'm thankful that He never fails to feed my hungry soul in so many ways despite the fact that I don't deserve it. When I seek Him, when I spend time in His Word and in prayer, when I keep the Main Thing the Main Thing,  I find that everything still doesn't get done every day.  The difference is.....I have peace, I have something resembling balance, and I find that all those balls on the floor and the ones still in the air don't seem so overwhelming.

And amazingly enough, He feeds my soul even when I push that time with Him right out of my schedule.  He feeds me with a song I needed to hear at just the right time, with friends who make my day with an unexpected surprise, email or text.  He feeds my soul with hugs and kisses and "You're the best mom ever" (even though I'm not)!  He sends His sustaining love to me in so many ways..............and to you, too.

You just have to learn to see it.

In the darkest of the darkest days, in the moments when there seems to be no end and you just have nothing left to give (you've been there, I know you have), turn to Him.  He's been there the whole time.  Lovingly waiting to give your soul what it so desperately needs, and for you to give back to Him whatever it is you keep taking out of His hands.

And unlike us, He can handle it......and begin to show us that we are, in the midst of this crazy, chaotic, stressful  life......

BLESSED.  Abundantly and indescribably so.

Is Anybody Still With Me????

I know......I disappeared.

I've been tired (exhausted).  Sick.  Tired.  Busy.  Tired.  Overwhelmed.  Tired.

Do you see a trend here? ; )

I've logged on to Blogger many times.  And stared at the screen wanting to post, but what do you post when the words won't come?

You don't.  Or, I don't.

You stare at the screen, you read some posts from your favorite blogs, and you stare at that blank screen some more.......and then, you log off.  Because you can't bring yourself to post when there's no inspiration ~~ or, maybe there is, but it's behind a closed door......waiting for healing, for a rested and rejuvenated spirit, for the fog to lift so that the words that are there can find their way to your fingertips again.

Perhaps the fog is clearing a little, because here I am.  Perhaps the door has been unlocked, but it's not completely open.

Today, we're headed for a day in the country.  Or, as close as we can get.  A day ahead to spend with the ♥sweetest♥ kind of ♥friends♥........my favorite ones.  The ones that just "get" you without even trying, the ones that you don't have to explain yourself to because their hearts are so much like yours.  A day of fresh air, sunshine, laughter and fun.  A day of breathing deeply & enjoying wide, open spaces......of watching my kids hang out with their favorite friends, too, and delighting in their freedom to run, play, and be loud and rambunctious without fear of disturbing neighbors whose houses are too close and ears too sensitive to the noise that healthy kids make.

A cake is baked.  Picnic packed.  And three kids whom I adore are anxiously asking, "Mom, can we leave soon?!  We don't want to be late!!"

Mom doesn't want to be late, either.

Just wanted to slip you a note under that door......to let you know I didn't disappear for good. ; )

Claiming this verse this week, because I know the promises in His Word to be true, and rest my weary soul in the rejuvenating comfort of His love and grace:

"For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every languishing and sorrowful soul.”

Party On! ~~ Staying Cool in the Summer Heat - Fun in the Sun Link-Up

Welcome to the 8th week of our Fun in the Summer Fun event!  Each Monday until September 7th,  Mama to 4 Blessings along with:

Sweet Phenomena

will be hosting Fun in the Summer Fun link up events.

Here's the line up:

The 1st Monday of each month: link up your "Kid friendly summer activities"
The 2nd Monday of each month: link up your "Kid friendly summer crafts"
The 3rd Monday of each month: link up your "Kid friendly summer recipes"
The 4th Monday of each month: link up your "How to stay cool in the summer heat"

Here’s how we “Stayed Cool in the Summer Heat!”

A couple of weeks ago, we had a belated birthday party for my boys, combined for the sake of Mom's sanity who has too much to do this summer & too little time to do it in! ; )

I let them each choose 1 friend to sleep over the night before the party, and with it being dreadfully hot, humid & mosquito-y outside had to come up with plenty of indoor activities to keep them occupied & happy.

Yay for Wii....which they took turns sharing.....

And when these two weren't playing Wii, they were chasing each other around the house....

It's truly amazing how much noise just 4 boys can make!!

We made homemade pizza for dinner:

And homemade ice cream for dessert. =)

They also spent much time running around with all the Nerf guns we own.....I never remember how heavily armed we are until they have friends over.  Note to self:  Hide The Guns next time! ; )

After a night full of activity and much rowdy laughter =), they woke up to blueberry muffins before I took them to Lowe's to build some very manly tow trucks.....

We then rushed home to pack up for the REAL party at a very ♥sweet♥ friend's pool..... because you can't have a party in Fl. in the middle of the summer that doesn't involve water!!  For some reason, I never did get the whole group together for a picture.....I think my brain was half melted/half exhausted! ; )

They also enjoyed the pool table......and so did the men {I think because it was air-conditioned inside ; )}!

Add food, cake and presents, and both of my ♥sweet♥ boys deemed a very great day.....and me a very awesome Mom.  They are so easy to please.... =)

How are you keeping it cool this summer?  Link up below.....I'd love to know!! ; )
